Chaos at Gorkhaland - 3 shot dead, Offices and buses burnt

The agitation for Gorkhaland has been there since years, with its way with various twists and turns. But today, 8th of February, three GJMM supporters were shot dead, several injured, and the public going in chaos burning buses and government offices. Strikes has been called off and there is panic everywhere.

8th February 2011 - It has been reported that 3 GJMM supporters were killed during a peace rally at a police firing at Kumani. Recent updates confirm that the number of people killed is 3, which earlier was reported to be 2.  It has also been reported that about 10 GJMM supporters and 20 CRPF is injured.

        Due to this event, there is a chaotic scenario all over the Darjeeling hills. There was a Chakka Jam called up which was withdrawn at 4pm today. Police vehicles were burnt to fire at Darjeeling. The Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council Tourist Office, near Loreto College at Chowrasta was also burnt. Buses were burnt at Kalimpong, including the burning of various government offices.These government offices that was burnt today at Kalimpong includes the Forest Bunglow of Kalimpong, the District Magistrate Office , SDO’s Office and PWD Office. Kalimpong also witnessed the burning of2 NBSTC Bus.

The police station at Pedong was also set off to fire. At Mungpoo, that forest vechile was burnt and a police van was burnt at Kurseong.News have come that the Jaldhaka Forest Guest House has been set into fire and burnt. More than 10,000 commuters and tourist have had said to be struck all over the Darjeeling hills. It is probable that indefinite strike maybe called off from tomorrow, and rumors have also spread that a 60 days continuous strike maybe called. Strike at Darjeelings hills have been common there days, as the agitation for Gorkhaland, the new Gorkha state has been going on, but a 60 days strike has never been witnessed.

         The names of two GJMM supporters shot dead are Bikki Lama, 25 years old, from Rangamutte Doars and Bimala Rai, 24 years old, from Khani Kalimpong.

        What more to happen? The agitation for Gorkhaland has taken various twists and turns, making the political condition at Darjeeling hills go worse everyday. Now the question is, What more to Happen ? How many more lives will be taken? How much more property will be damaged? All we can do is just wait and watch.

Mirik is basically in fine condition with a pleasant temperature throughout the year. During winters, it falls a minimum of about thirteen degrees and a maximum of thirty degrees during summers.

At the west of the lake, is a holy shrine called Devi sthan dedicated to the holy hindu goddess. IF you’re pious, you should definitely visit the Devi Sthan templeYou can also visit the hanuman and shiva temple located just side of the lake. The Bokar Monastery is another place worth visiting.
The tip of the Mirik hill is Deosi Dara, from where you can see the beautiful view of Mirik, the Sumendup lake and even the hills and plains below. At Deosi dara, is the Rameetay Dara from where you can see the most beautoful sight of sun rise and sun set and even the view of Kurseong. Kawlay Dara is another place in Mirik where you can try visiting for a lovely experience of breath taking view.
While you’re on your visit in Mirik, you may try visiting Rai Dhap which is also a pinic spot. Rai Dhap is a small lake of fresh water that is potable source of drinking water.
A very good option would be a pony ride around the Sumendup lake, or the orange orchards but a ride in the tea plantations in a pony would be the best.
HOW TO REACH MIRIK ?
REACHING MIRIK BY AIR -Bagdogra is the nearest airport to Mirik, which is located near Siliguri at about 55 kilmetres from Mirik.
REACHING MIRIK BY ROAD AND BY RAIL – The New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) is the nearest railway station to Mirik which is located 60 km away from Mirik hill station resort. The road ways are excellent to Mirik connecting Mirik to Darjeeling, Kurseong, SIliguri and Kurseong.
